I grew up watching my grandmother read playing cards for her community. People who had lost everything, starting over in a new country, would come to her for guidance. I didn't know it then, but I was taking notes.

At home, the cosmos showed up differently. I was a Tiger in the Vietnamese lunar zodiac (Mười hai con giáp) but I always knew there was more to it than that. I'd ask my mother questions, and she'd try to explain beyond the basics, the way the animals and elements layered together to say something deeper about who you were.

Meanwhile, our home was arranged according to phong thủy–feng shui–because, of course, it was. We had the lucky three-legged gold toad by the front door. There was always a fountain somewhere in the house. Anytime we moved, the house address numbers had to add up to something auspicious. None of this was discussed as spiritual practice. It was just how you built a life.

The cosmos wasn't something I learned about from nowhere. It was just how we lived.

Years later, at my own crossroads, I turned to the stars and cards. They answered.

As I got older, I learned it was a language for the soul I didn't know I was missing. Western astrology gave me new vocabulary for something I'd always felt in my bones.
